What I’ve Learned About Plugins

Plugins allow websites to add features such as backups, analytics, security, caching, and accessibility without custom coding. However, not all plugins are created in the same way, and using poorly maintained or unsafe plugins can introduce security vulnerabilities, slow performance, or even break a website.

When selecting plugins, it is important to install them only from trusted locations, especially the official WordPress.org plugin tab. This ensures the plugin has been reviewed and meets the standards.

Things to look for when selecting plugins:

  • Recent updates and maintenance
  • Positive user reviews
  • Compatibility with the current WordPress version
  • Clear support resources
  • Minimal performance impact

Plugins can also be discovered through community forums, developer websites, and recommendations from reputable web development resources.

For my additional plugin, I selected “Smush”  because it provides use that benefits both site admins and visitors. I researched similar plugins and chose this one due to ease of use, reliability, and positive reviews.
